Vinyl acrylic emulsion polymers are a staple in the North American (NA) coatings market and are primarily utilized in the contractor segment due to their cost and performance benefits. With consumer and industry demands to meet newer high-performance requirements (example: Green Seal, Master Painter’s Institute, etc.), standard vinyl acrylics alone may not meet all required specifications. Due to the many other benefits that vinyl acrylics provide, there is a need for higher performance vinyl acrylic emulsion polymers that not only meet those standards, but also retain their excellent cost-performance balance. Of course, preserving other features, such as ASTM scrub resistance and touch up performance, as well as providing excellent pigment-dispersing efficiency, are critical to the success of a high-performance vinyl acrylic. This article will present some of the strengths of vinyl acrylics, highlight some challenges to meeting higher performance standards, and demonstrate that a 100% vinyl acrylic can meet those challenging standards.
